An End-of-Life Doula
When a person's life journey is nearing the end,
an End-of-Life Doula becomes a compassionate
companion for the person and their loved-ones
for practical emotional, and educational support.
When requested, this may include:
✔ supports a person having their best quality of life
✔ listens
✔ foster self-determination for the person by assisting them in
gathering information and encouraging them to make informed
choices that are right for them.
✔ celebrates a person's life through life-review, legacy projects, or storytelling
✔ provides information including death-education, resources, referrals
✔ honors the value of dignity for all
✔ listens
✔ final vigil planning
✔ supports processing feelings
✔ bedside presence / vigil presence
✔ listens to loved ones
✔ being there, listening when confused
✔ maximizes the self-determination of the individual and honors loved-ones
as part of the circle of care
✔ creates opportunities for storytelling
✔ listens
✔ guided imagery and visualization
✔ initial grief support for loved ones
✔ provides non-medical holistic support and comfort to the dying
person and their loved-ones, which may include education and
guidance as well as emotional, spiritual or practical care
✔ listens
life is a circle, a spiral, not a linear continuum with a clear beginning and a solid end
